Aiming to be the world’s leading manufacturer of premium electric vehicles by 2020, Audi has revealed its plans to debut a plug-in hybrid in 2014. This was made clear by Franciscus van Meel, Audi’s manager for electric mobility, to AutoWeek during a technical workshop at the company’s headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany. Though Meel didn’t reveal any technical details of the vehicle but Audi’s alternative powertrain plants include a full hybrid version of A8 and Q5 SUV.

These models are due in 2012 and Audi is expected to release hybrid versions of both in around 12 months time. On the other, Audi’s board member for technology, Michael Dick, sees Audi’s internal combustion having 30% better fuel economy by 2020, with 5% of the brand’s lineup to be purely electric. For that purpose, the brand has already spent a whopping $88 million to establish an EV development and testing facility at its Ingolstadt headquarters, Germany.
